Utility Pole Fire Protection

UTILITY POLE FIRE PROTECTION

Wildfires and Bushfires are major threats to utility infrastructure. High replacement costs, downed lines, associated outages, high cost of re-installations, and revenue loss are major liabilities. We work with the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited to protect electricity poles from wildfires for a small fraction of the cost of replacement. Our NoFire A18 Fire-Retardant Coating system protects utility poles from fire damage and extinguishes poles ignited by lightning strikes.

THE PERFECT SOLUTION

NoFire Fireproof and Fire-Retardant Coatings are decorative and Fire protective intumescent coatings designed to retard and stop (the spread of) flames in the event of a fire. NoFire is a zero-flame index coating and has the appearance of traditional-ordinary paint. It complies with building and fire codes and gives coated substrates (and surfaces) the required fire or flame-spread protection.

NoFire Fire-retardant intumescent coating will not prevent fires from occurring but will certainly stop the propagation and spread of fires. NoFire Coating is perfect for application to walls, steel, aluminium, wood, and wood products, Plastic, Fiberglas, and all types of composites and substrates. It complies with the most stringent requirements for flame spread, Zero-smoke production, non-toxic emissions, and heat release – even when it comes into contact with fire at extreme temperatures in excess of 1000° C. NoFire Paint does everything an ordinary paint does EXCEPT BURN!

Utility (electricity) Poles protected from Bush-Fires

At 1100°C with heat fluxes of around 150kW/m2, most substrates (Wall, Concrete, Wood, Plastic, Composites, Steel, etc.) will burn, lose their structural integrity, melt, and or even be consumed rapidly. A hydrocarbon pool fire will generate temperatures of up to 1100°C with heat fluxes of around 150kW/m2 which is hotter than bush or wildfires, and many times hotter and more intense than what is required to consume a highly dense wood very rapidly.

To simulate the effectiveness of NoFire A18 Fire Retardant coating, two wooden utility poles, one treated with NoFire and one untreated, were subjected to severe (hydrocarbon fire) burning. The fires were ignited around the utility poles with the flames hitting the surfaces of the poles directly. While both poles caught fire when hit with that much hydrocarbons, the pole treated with NoFire A18 burned less intensely and quickly extinguished as the flammable liquid burned out.
